Been a while — Have a jelly donut

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

So it’s been a while. Haven’t posted in ages. You must all be going through withdrawls…

I’m going to leave a short message for all my faithful followers: I <3 you! Have a jelly donut!

Really though, I’ll be writing again soon. ;)

ranting and holidays

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

This is a blog.

This is a blog that primarily I read.

This is a rant.

This is a rant that primarily I need.

Samhain was Sunday (Monday if you’re picky) and I didn’t do my ritual. I didn’t want to. Funny since I had been waiting for it all week prior. Part of the reason is that I was actually enjoying myself for once doing NOTHING at all related to work or school, and I wanted to be unproductive. Part of it was that it’s damn cold outside, and I had really wanted to do it outside.

That said, I did honor the holiday. I told my kids about the history of Samhain, tweeted a bit, talked a bit with a friend about a bonfire and a chicken, and recognized my own ancestors a few weeks before. Halloween (Samhain) is my favorite holiday, this year it was both good and sucky. I think I’ll MAKE the time tonight for a short ritual meditation to think about the coming year.

That’s all for now.

The Empty Bottle

There’s an empty bottle in the sink,
an empty hole in my chest,
the first in an effort
to fill the second.

There’s a light in the hall,
a brightness ahead of me,
it lights my way
and leaves me in darkness.

I can hear my name,
feel a touch on my skin,
always with me
leaving me alone.

The future spreads endless,
the past is fleeting,
when it begins
let it end again.

Paradigm Shifts and Plato’s Cave

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Looking back through the stages of my life, I can pick out dozens or even hundreds of small shifts in how I view the world, but there is one that stands out amongst all the others. I expect that every person who has really taken the effort to contemplate their existence has experienced a similar moment, no matter the end result of their meditations. Religion is a driving force in society and a topic many people shy away from in order to avoid offending others, or gathering criticism upon themselves. However, whether a person is a Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Atheist, or something else, if they have strong beliefs it is likely that they can pinpoint the change or series of changes that led to that faith. It shapes who we are. My greatest paradigm shift was a religious shift, and here I’ll describe it in terms of Plato’s cave. (more…)

The Traveling Druid Bag

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

As I work with the druid culture and beliefs I’ve found that the best rituals I’ve performed are outside, in nature. This has one main drawback: it’s not always convenient to carry all the things along that you need for a ritual. I often have an “urge” to go and worship, or something in my life causes me to “need” to hold a ritual. If I’m not prepared, it can take an hour or so to gather everything together for a full ritual. I’ve solved this by putting together a Druid Bag. (more…)

Making Runes

Friday, August 27th, 2010

So I have a set of Druid Animal Oracle cards that I LOVE to use. The problem is that they are like 3″ x 5″ and are way too big to actually carry around with me conveniently…

I also have been thinking about trying out runes, but the typical rune symbols hold no meaning for me and it’s rather daunting to look at starting to memorize an entire alphabet right now, what with work/school/religion studies…

Solution! I’m going to make a set of runes to represent the animal oracle I’m already familiar with! Planning on making a practice set first, getting a wooden dowel from the hardware store and slicing it into chips, then dremeling the symbols in. Eventually I want to find a downed branch of the right size and make them from scratch, maybe even carving them in rather than using the dremel.

The problem with that is finding the right kind of wood. I’m discovering that the branches I find in my grove are much too easily broken. :/ So the search begins for a good rune-chip providing stick! And in the meantime, I need to find images to carve into the runes…
